Repair or Replace? How to Tell What You're Actually Dealing With
Most hot water systems last between eight and twelve years, and the age of your unit is the single best predictor of what happens next.
If yours is under eight years old and you've lost hot water suddenly, the cause is usually a single failed component such as a heating element, thermostat, pilot light or pressure relief valve, and a repair will have you back to normal the same day for a fraction of the cost of a new system.
Past the ten year mark the calculation changes.
Tanks corrode from the inside out, so a unit that is leaking from the body rather than from a fitting has reached the end of its life and no repair will bring it back.
The same goes for a system that runs lukewarm, runs out halfway through a shower, or has needed two or three call-outs in the past year. At that point you are paying repeatedly to keep an inefficient unit limping along, and a replacement pays for itself in reliability and running costs.
We'll tell you which of those two situations you're in before you commit to anything, because quoting you for a new system you don't need is a good way to never get referred to your neighbour.

Age is the deciding factor. Under eight years old, a sudden failure is usually one component and a repair makes sense. Over ten years, or leaking from the tank body itself, replacement is almost always cheaper across the life of the system. We'll give you a straight answer on site before you commit to anything.

On an electric system it's most often a failed heating element or thermostat, or a tripped safety switch at the switchboard. On gas, it's usually the pilot light or the gas supply. All of these are repairs rather than replacements, and most can be sorted in a single visit.

A small amount of dripping from the pressure relief valve while the system heats is normal and by design. Constant dripping, or a valve that has been leaking for weeks, means it needs replacing. Left alone it will keep draining hot water you've paid to heat, so it's worth getting looked at.

A straight swap where the new unit sits in the same spot and uses the existing connections is usually a few hours, and you'll have hot water again the same day. Changing system type, for example moving from electric to a heat pump or gas, takes longer because the electrical or gas work has to be done as part of the install.

Usually yes, but it affects the cost. Moving a unit means new pipework, and depending on the system type, new gas or electrical runs as well. Heat pumps also have clearance and noise requirements that limit where they can sit. We'll tell you what's possible at your place when we quote.

If you're already connected to mains gas, a continuous flow gas unit is usually the most practical choice and never runs out. Electric storage is the cheapest to install and the simplest like-for-like swap. Heat pumps cost more up front and run on a fraction of the electricity. Solar has the highest install cost and the lowest running cost. We match it to your household size, your existing connections and how long you plan to stay in the house.
